360 Degrees of Street Art - A Screenbased Experience
Pip van Gelderen
During my virtual derive I came across a street in Hawaii that was filled with beautiful art murals and street art. I discovered this was done by an organisation called POW!WOW!, that has events all around the world, including Rotterdam. POW!WOW! Rotterdam is an annual street art festival where artists get to design their own murals. Its purpose is to bring art to the streets, where it’s accessible for anyone from any culture or background.

For my project I wanted to capture these murals, but I also wanted to capture the streets. I think the streets are as important as the art in street art. I created 360 degrees videos of 7 different murals or street art located in Afrikaanderwijk in Rotterdam, to give the viewer an insight of the neighbourhood and the environment of where these murals are located. You can scroll through the video as if you would be there yourself.

You could say my videos have an additional purpose, since it’s virtual and posted online, so many more people have access to these murals. POW!WOW! Rotterdam is an international event that draws an international public, but since there are travelling restrictions due to Covid-19, not so many people get to see it as it normally would. By posting the videos online, these restrictions are gone. People can experience the murals online as if they would be there themselves.

This project is called Rotterdam Art Ride (ROAR) and it consists of 18 painted support pillars of the metro track between Rijnhaven and Maashaven. All 18 pillars were painted by local and international artists. The meaning behind the project is to put attention to the neighbourhood, so that people will discover what Afrikaanderwijk has to offer

360 Degrees of Street Art - by Naomi King for POW!WOW! Rotterdam

Street art is not just about the murals, but also about the streets. Experience watching these murals by Naomi King in the Afrikaanderwijk in Rotterdam, as if you would be there yourself.

Naomi King, a Dutch artist from Rotterdam, started working for a Belgian comics publisher Arboris as translator. She would get 'paid' in comics, due to her age of 13, and started making them herself as well. Ever since she was handed a spray can during a date, she discovered that walls felt like the ultimate canvas. Her influences in her work range from art nouveau to '80s Saturday morning cartoons, which she mixes in a highly dynamic style full of exuberant colours.

What is the most notable thing for your development as a designer that you learned from doing this assignment?

I have learned how important the experience of art can be. Street art is very popular on social media, like Instagram, but these images only show the art itself. Street art is more than just the murals, it's also about the streets, the environment, the experience of art in the city, with noise and trash and smell. I tried to create that experience for the viewer online by creating 360 degrees videos.
